Jesus said therefore
‘What is the Kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it? It is like the mustard seed that someone took and sowed in the garden; it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches’.
Luke 13: 18-20

Dear Parents
Staffing Arrangements
Ryan Matchett
Term 3 Susan Carswell to take LSL
School Driveway and Disabled Car Parks
In the interest of school safety and consideration for others, vehicles should not enter our school driveway from Montagu Place. While the gates are closed of an afternoon, they are often opened in the morning for access by our waste management contractors. Parents and carers should not be parking near the school hoppers or dropping children off in that area. A reminder to everyone that our disabled car parks, at the front of the school, are for those families displaying a disability parking permit. We have a number of families who need such access when dropping off or picking up children.
Uniform Code
Despite efforts to promote our uniform code, there are families who show little regard for our school expectation and presentation. This is disappointing when so many parents send their child to school beautifully presented. Please ensure the children are wearing neat items identified in our uniform code. Torn and old hats should be replaced. Hair should be neatly presented and tied back. Please, no coloured hair or zigzag lines and children should wear the correct coloured socks and shoes with their sports and winter uniform.
Recently the Year 5 & 6 children presented a petition outlining their request to wear shorts or long pants during Term 2 & 3, the terms for our winter uniform. The petition was presented at the recent Community Council meeting. Following consideration of the students presented arguments Council has agreed to grant the Year 5 & 6 children their request, for boys and girls to wear the correct blue trousers or shorts, for the remainder of the year. The change will be evaluated at the end of the year.
Official Enrolment Period Ends Friday 31 May
Do not miss out on a place at St Monica's. Siblings must be enrolled by next Friday for consideration in the first round of placement offers.
Reconciliation Week
Next week we will be acknowledging Reconciliation Week at St Monica's. At its heart, reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples, for the benefit of all Australians.
God bless
Carmel Maguire
St Monica and Perseverance
One of St Monica’s greatest character traits was perseverance. St Augustine (her often wayward son) commented on her commitment to praying for him to change his ways. She did not give up, even in the face of some major challenges. St Monica also cared for and prayed for her husband throughout their marriage life- Patricius was baptised before he died. The power of persistent prayer is amazing. I am sure you all have personal stories of how prayer has impacted your lives.
This term at St Monica’s our theme is ‘Like St Monica… we persevere.’ Share with your children your experiences of how you had to work hard to achieve something- as a child or as an adult. Use this language at home to draw attention to the emotions/feelings of when you succeed and you can always remind your child/ren of Albert Einstein’s famous quote (1879-1955) “ It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer.” I think he was channelling St Monica a millennium and a half into the future!Religious Education News - Carmel Rheinberger

National Simultaneous Storytime
Yesterday at St Monica’s students gathered with their buddy classes to join over 1 million children in 9,860 locations across Australia and New Zealand for Simultaneous Storytime. The students enjoyed the story "Alpacas with Maracas" by Matt Cosgrave. They laughed at the funny antics of best friends alpacas Mac and Al as they tried playing different instruments for the talent contest. This was an excellent opportunity for the students to have fun engaging with Australian literature.
Year 6 Book Club
This term, I am starting a Book Club for Year 6 students. This is an opportunity for parents and children to read the same book and join with other parents and children to discuss the book. The book for this term will be a Children’s Book Council of Australia shortlisted book titled “Lenny’s Book of Everything’ by Karen Foxlee which is available at bookstores. We will meet at a time to be decided on Thursday 27 June to discuss the book.
Term 2 School Fees have been invoiced and full payment of school fees is due by Friday 7 June.
If you have a Direct Debit arrangement in place no additional payment is required. However, please ensure you have sufficient funds in your account for the debits to take place successfully. In the event one of your debits is refused, you are required to make a separate payment to cover the missed payment.
As always, please contact the School Finance Officer should you need to discuss your school fees account.

The month’s free travel period comes to an end on Sunday 26 May 2019. With paid services starting next week on Monday, May 27, students are being reminded to top up their MyWay cards or purchase tickets to avoid fines of up to $181 for travelling without a ticket. During the month’s free travel period, whilst drivers have encouraged all students to tap on and off, it has been brought to our attention that there are some students who are not. Tapping on and off is required by all customers travelling on light rail and buses, and also provides Transport Canberra with accurate data to plan and review services in the future.
Where can I get a MyWay card? |
A select number of newsagencies, post offices, and Access Canberra outlets. For the full list visit: https://www.transport.act.gov.au/tickets-and-myway/get-myway/recharge-agents |
I’m a student, how much does it cost? |
A MyWay card is $2.50, and then you’ll need to top it up for travel. Concession: Tertiary: $1.61 School student – school day: $1.22 School student – non-school day: $1.61 Weekday cap: $4.80 Weekend/public holiday cap: $2.17 |
I want to catch a bus and light rail – will it cost me two tickets? |
All MyWay fares include a free 90-minute transfer period so you can connect to a different bus or light rail service or commence your return journey using the same ticket within 90 minutes of purchase. Daily tickets are valid until midnight on the day of purchase. |
What if I forget to tap on/off? |
If you don’t tap on, you could be fined up to $181. If you don’t tap off after a trip, you’ll be charged a default fare. |
My balance is low, how do I recharge? |
You can instantly top up your card at a recharge agent, set up an autoload direct debit online, or top up at a ticket vending machine at all light rail platforms and major bus stations. |
