Dear St Monica’s families and friends,
HOLY WEEK & EASTER - This Sunday, we look forward to the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. In the lead up to this day however, we are reminded of the suffering and sacrifice Jesus made for each of us when he shared the Last Supper with his friends, prayed in the garden on his own to finally walking the road to Calvary where he was crucified and died.
However, let us remember that after the darkness there is light and each day is a brand new start for us all. I wish all St Monica’s families a Happy Easter. If you are travelling come back to us safely, if you are staying in Canberra enjoy some relax time. We look forward to next Tuesday, when 3 White will lead the Easter Whole School Prayer Liturgy at 10.30am up in the Church.
CAMP: This week our Year 5s were lucky enough to attend camp at Borambola, NSW. One nice thing about going on camp with the students is you get to see their personalities outside of the school environment. I sincerely thank Kathy Moir, Laura Frogley, Ryan Matchett and Brendan Hague, who freely gave up their personal and family time to look after the students. It was pleasing to receive reports from the teachers about how well the students worked with one another to solve problems and accept challenges both in teams and as individuals.
ENROLMENT PERIOD FOR 2025 - St Monica’s is now accepting enrolments for the 2025 school year! We also have places available in all year levels for 2024.
Our Open Days and Tours will be held on:
- Tuesday, 14 May: 9:00am – 11:00am and 4:00pm – 6:00pm with a Parent Information session being offered on this day from 6:15pm – 7:00pm
- Thursday, 16 May: 9:00am – 11:00am and 4:00pm – 6:00pm
Whilst a variety of formats will be used to promote our school during this time, we know that ‘word of mouth’ is often the best form of advertising. I sincerely thank, our wonderful parent community, who always speak so positively about St Monica’s.
Pre-Service Teachers - We are so pleased to welcome Ruta Valiultye and Courtney Allaid to St Monica’s Primary School. Ruta and Courtney are Pre-Service teachers from the Australian Catholic University, who have been placed in Kindergarten Maroon and 1 Maroon to gain practical knowledge about the day to day teaching and running of a classroom. Good teacher training and experiences in schools are important for the development of Pre-Service teachers. We are pleased to be able to assist them on their journey in becoming effective teachers and learners.
TERM 2 DATES - Students return to school on Tuesday 30 April in Winter School uniform. Please try on the uniforms over the next few weeks, to ensure they are ready for day one next term. Winter Uniforms can be ordered from the Uniform Shop via Qkr! or pop in on Friday mornings from 8.45am.

Prayer and Worship
This is it! This week is the pinnacle of our Catholic faith. This week is Holy Week, the most important week of our Catholic Year and includes three main events.
Holy Week begins seven days before Easter Sunday with Palm Sunday. At St Monica’s we started our Holy week with a Palm Sunday Liturgy led by 1 White with energy and excitement. On Palm Sunday we celebrate the triumphant entry of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, into Jerusalem, riding a donkey. On that day, the people laid palms before Him, a gesture reserved for triumphant leaders. We celebrate this at Mass by distributing palms. The palms are blessed at Mass and eventually returned to the Church where they are burned, and their ashes saved and distributed at the following year's Ash Wednesday services.
Later, when Jesus entered the Temple in Jerusalem, he angrily drove out the money changers who had turned the Temple court into a place of business instead of devotion. Once the court was cleared, Jesus began teaching the masses. Meanwhile, His enemies drew plans to kill Him.
The next major event in Holy Week is Holy Thursday. On Holy Thursday, Jesus washed his disciples' feet and celebrated the Jewish Passover feast with the disciples. We know this feast as the Last Supper. Today our Year Faith and Justice leaders led us in a Holy Thursday Liturgy where all students had their hands washed and then went back to their classrooms to share bread and blackcurrant juice in memory of Jesus. After supper, Jesus went to the Mount of Olives and prayed. From this event comes inspiration for our practice of Eucharistic Adoration, where we are invited to spend one hour in prayer with Jesus, truly present in the Eucharist; Body, Blood, and Divinity. Holy Thursday is the night He was betrayed by Judas and arrested.
The next event in Holy Week is Good Friday where we commemorate the trial, punishment, and crucifixion of Our Lord. Today Year 6 has led us in a Good Friday Stations of the Cross Liturgy. On Good Friday, Jesus was brought before Annas, a powerful Jewish cleric who condemned Jesus for blasphemy. From there, Jesus was presented to Pilate for trial. Although Pilate found no guilt in Jesus, he agreed to have him crucified to appease the crowd of people and prevent a riot. Christ was stripped, flogged, and crowned with thorns. He was then forced to carry His Cross to the place of His execution. There, He was nailed to the Cross between two thieves who were likewise crucified. Later that afternoon, seeking to ensure Christ's death, a Roman guard stabbed him in his side with a spear. When Jesus died, an earthquake is said to have occurred as well as a great darkness which covered the land. Suddenly, many people knew Jesus was the Son of God.
Jesus was taken and laid quickly in a borrowed tomb, in accord with Jewish law, which required the dead be buried by sundown before the Sabbath.
In our churches, the Tabernacle is left empty, to show that Christ is departed.
On Holy Saturday, we remember that Jesus was descended into hell where He preached the Gospel to those who died before and opened the way to heaven for all those who were worthy. Holy Saturday concludes Holy Week.
The following day is Easter Sunday, the day on which it was discovered the Tomb was empty, and our Lord was resurrected, triumphing over death once and for all time. Next Tuesday at 10.30am Year 3 White will lead us with a Resurrection Liturgy in the church. You are invited to join us.

Sacraments
Last weekend 5 of our students were Baptised by Father Mick. Baptism is the first Sacrament in our Catholic Faith and the initiation to becoming Catholic. At Baptism, we receive a spiritual mark and the gifts of the Hoy Spirit. We congratulate Cooper, Chelsea, Brooke, Riley and Hugh on formally becoming active members of our Catholic community and pray that they use their gifts given by the Holy Spirit in our community with courage and confidence.
We also have 50 of our students preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Next week these children will complete their preparation by going to their first confession. Please keep these children in your prayers as they take this step in their faith journey.

Social Action and Justice
Project compassion finishes today. We are still counting our final donations, but we have raised over $800 during this Lenten season. What an outstanding achievement St Monica’s!
This year, we shared with you the story of three inspiring women from across the globe, who overcame challenges to complete their education, access water and find secure employment. With the support of compassionate people like you, they are now forging a path to a better future for their families and their communities.
Ronita from the Philippines has now graduated high school and secured a job at a call centre. This job was only possible because of a certificate she gained from completing her studies.
Leaia and her family now have a water tank at their home in Samoa. She and her family now have a steady supply of clean drinking water. Next year, they will also have a toilet built, with the support of Caritas Samoa, which will further improve their health and living conditions.
Memory completed her vocational training course in carpentry and joinery. After completing a work contract at one of the largest electrical companies in Malawi, Memory now plans to return to her village and provide carpentry services to people in her community.
It’s through the generosity of people like you that we can continue to support people like Ronita, Leaia and Memory.
There is still time to donate! Together, we can help vulnerable communities face their challenges today and build a better tomorrow, for all future generations.
Please donate to Project Compassion.

Update from the Fete Committee
White Elephant
Don’t miss out on our final White Elephant pre-loved goods drop off session. Clean out your closets, cupboards, kitchens and garages, and bring your gently used items to the school hall on Monday 1 April between 2 and 4pm. Remember, items must be clean and in good condition. We cannot accept broken goods.
We wouldd greatly appreciate any soft toys for our Pick-a-Duck stall.
Volunteering
It’s not too late to help out. We are looking for volunteers for our 1-2pm and 2-3pm slots. Click the link here to sign up or get in touch with the fete team if you have any questions.
The fete would not be possible without our wonderful volunteers. The School Council will be hosting a thank you event for all our volunteers after the fete – please see the invitation below for more detail. We hope to see you all there!
Garden stall
We are looking to make our garden stall bloom with life! If you have any extra plants you would like to contribute we would love to accept your donations.
Bake Stall
The cake stall is looking for bakers/cooks to create delicious goodies. Last year we sold out in two hours so we’re looking for additional donations this year.
The following items are popular but we encourage bakers/cooks to also consider this year’s fete theme celebrating our diversity and consider cooking international delicacies (biscotti, baklava, pretzels, burfi):
- cakes, slices and biscuits
- savoury muffins, cheese biscuits
- snacks (e.g. toffees, fudge, meringues, honey joys, marshmallows etc) and
- jams, pickles, preserves and chutneys.
Entertainment Program
We are putting the finishing touches on our Entertainment Program for the day. This will come out in the next couple of days. In the meantime, if you have any questions on timing, please reach out to us via stmfete@gmail.com.
Want to contact us?
Please get in touch – we would love to hear your ideas and happy to answer any questions. You can reach us via stmfete@gmail.com.

Fete Choir Performance - Alissa Pearson
The St Monica’s Junior and Senior Choirs are very excited to be performing at the Fete on Saturday 6 April.
The choirs will open the festivities at 11am in the Courtyard.
Mrs Pearson would like to meet all singers in the Music room at 10.30am on Fete day to warm up and get into position. Many thanks!
We had a special visitor drop some chocolate eggs all around the playgroup room today! Luckily we found them in the Easter Bunny cups that we enjoyed making along with our Easter Bunny ears, but not all of them made it out the door as they ended up being gobbled up with much excitement! Have a blessed Easter from St Monica's Monstar Playgroup.
What is anxiety?
Anxiety is a natural and normal emotion all of us experience at some point.
It is caused by a part of your brain called amygdala which detects physical/social threat and prepares your body to fight or leave to escape danger. It becomes problematic when it becomes a common habit and happens too easily, too often and in unneeded situations.
10-15% children in Australia have anxiety (Adults 17.4%).
A child who has anxiety may not want to go to school, play or mix with other children, be extremely shy, clingy and/or upset in new situation, or avoid trying new things.
What can we do?
We all want to protect our children from getting hurt or making mistakes. However, in many cases, our children learn more from difficult or challenging experiences.
Here are some not-so-helpful ways of dealing with anxiety in children:
- Helping and protecting your child (too soon and too often) in stressful situations;
- Allowing avoidance;
- Becoming impatient with your child;
- Letting your own anxiety get in the way
We can help our children build their confidence in facing challenges by:
- Paying particular attention to brave behaviours when your child faces their fears;
- Celebrating your child’s effort as soon as possible;
- Highlighting the process – “I loved how you put aside your worries and tried to enjoy the game!”;
- Consistency when encouraging your child – no empty threats or bribes;
- Letting your child solve problems on their own;
- Modelling – “I am nervous about this meeting but I will do my best”;
- Keeping feelings in check
*The BRAVE Program is an interactive, online program for the prevention and treatment of childhood and adolescent anxiety. The programs are free, and provide ways for children and teenagers to better cope with their worries. There are also programs for parents. https://brave4you.psy.uq.edu.au/
