Dear St Monica’s families and friends,
What a beautiful day it was on Monday for our St Monica’s Athletics Carnival. Whilst this is always a team effort, I wish to express my sincere thanks to Mrs Liz Foster for her smooth coordination of the day. Thanks also to those parents who were able to assist us with timekeeping, place judging, starting, recording and marshalling. I am so appreciative of your time and goodwill to help us out. We cannot run successful and fun days without the support of our parent community. Thank you!
Thanks also to the teachers, spectators and of course Merici College for their generous offering of the oval for the day. Last but not least, a carnival would not be successful if we didn’t have enthusiastic students entered into events. Every single St Monica’s student gave it their all, whether it was tunnel ball, the parachute game, in the long jump pit or a running race, there were smiles all round.
Special Prayers
Please keep the O'Connor family - Gus (5FM), Molly (2E) and Lucy (ex St Monica's student) in your prayers as their grandfather passed away this week. Please keep the Sureda family - Jett (5M) and Sonny (2MD) in your prayers as their grandfather passed away last weekend.
Protected Industrial Action
I wish to thank families for their understanding around the Protected Industrial Action that is taking place on Friday. I want to reassure you, that St Monica’s Primary School will be open but operating with limited supervision on this day. We will only have 15 teaching staff on-site and depending on student numbers we may need to combine classes. Where possible, I have asked families to make alternative arrangements for their child/ren.
End of May - Hats Off Day
In Canberra sun protection is required for part or most of each day between August and May. The end of May is ‘Hats Off Day’ whilst the beginning of August is ‘Hats On Again’ for all of us. As such, the children will no longer be required to wear their hats beginning Week 7 (30 May).
Pupil Free Days
Tuesday 31 May, Friday July 1 and Monday 18 July (Term 3) are pupil free days for all St Monica's students. On these days staff will be involved in teacher collaboration, planning and programming and focusing on our wider system Catalyst priorities. SMOOSH will offer out of school care on all of these days. Enrolment for the 31 May date is still open. Enrolment for SMOOSH on Friday 1 July and Monday 18 July will be included in the School Holiday Vacation Care enrolment form.
Tell Them From Me Surveys
Parents, Teachers and Students in Years 4 - 6 are invited to provide feedback on their experience of our school using an online survey. The surveys are an important part of our whole school evaluation and planning process. Earlier this week, I sent out an alert via Compass, inviting you to complete the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey.
We value the role of parents and carers within our school community, and we would appreciate your feedback. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership, to further improve student learning and wellbeing at St Monica’s Primary School. The survey is anonymous and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. You are able to access the parent survey on your computer or mobile device through URL link that was sent out via Compass. Information about the Student Survey has been sent home to the families of students in Years 4 - 6.
Peace and blessings to all,
Happy Birthday to the following students celebrating a Birthday this week
Alec F, Tobie S, Eden T, Joel M, Lachlan D, Adelina S
This week Kirra Thompson who is a valued member of the St Monica’s staff and School community shares her image of Jesus and who He is for her.
‘This image that I have chosen of Jesus represents to me the openness that Jesus shows to everyone.
Jesus is always willing to listen and support, be a guidance and reassurance to all. Jesus comes with open arms.’
St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal
Winter is just around the corner and our nights are getting colder. Each year, we proudly support the Vinnies Winter Appeal, collecting new donations of warm winter clothes and blankets.
Why do we support this appeal?
The 2016 Census data showed that 116, 000 people are homeless in Australia. Across the area of Canberra/ Goulburn there are 40 000 people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness due to poverty.
What can we do?
The Vinnies Winter appeal aims to help people at risk of/or experiencing homelessness by providing emergency relief, outreach and support. Our participation in the appeal will help ensure that families get the financial and emotional support they need to keep themselves and their children safe.
We are hoping to collect the following new items over the next 5 weeks:
- Gloves
- Socks
- Jackets
- Beanies
- Blankets
- Sleeping Bags
All your kind donations go directly to people in need in our community or are sold at our local Vinnies Centres to raise funds for other forms of assistance like respite programs and crisis accommodation.
Thank you for your support!

Athletics Carnival - Ryan Matchett
Athletics Carnival
What a wonderful day we all had on Monday! We could not have asked for a nicer May autumn day, the sun was shining and it was wonderful to be all together again as a community. From all reports, all students had a fantastic day and it was awesome to see so much sportsmanship and skill. House points and final results will be finalised in the coming weeks. Special thanks to:
- The Year 3-6 teachers led by Mrs Foster who prepared the day
- All of our wonderful parent and community volunteers who came along to ensure the smooth running of the carnival
- All of our community for coming along and supporting the children
- The Year 6 Sport Leaders for their leadership of house groups and encouraging their peers to do their best
As a school community, we would also like to specifically thank Merici College for providing such a wonderful venue to complete our carnival and allowing their students to help set up and support staff and students throughout the day.
We will communicate down the track when ribbons will be handed out at an awards assembly and who has progressed to the Belconnen Regional Carnival, which will be held in August.
Please contact either Liz Foster or myself if you have any questions or require further information.
Calthorpe's House and Mugga Mugga Cottage - Emma Russell
Year 1 Excursion to Calthorpe’s House and Mugga Mugga Cottage
On Wednesday 18 May Year 1 travelled by bus to visit Calthorpe’s House and Mugga Mugga Cottage. This excursion was part of our history unit where we have been exploring how some aspects of daily life have changed over time, while others have remained the same. We had the opportunity to explore these museums, play old fashioned games, ask questions and see how families lived in the past. It was a wonderful day of learning and excitement for all the children.
The Matt Giteau Cup - Michael McFadden
The Matt Giteau Cup
On Tuesday a team of 10 students from Years 5 and 6 gathered at Southwell Park in Lyneham for the Rugby Union Gala Day.
There were teams from across the northside competing in a round robin competition. Each game was played on half a field with modified rules to suit the skill levels of primary school kids. Lasting 15 minutes, with no breaks, the games were fast and furious.
The St Monica’s team started a little tentatively and were beaten by Mother Theresa in the first game. However, their coach Jonno McPhillips, quickly ironed out the problems and for the rest of the comp, St Monica’s were unbeatable. They all played exceptionally well. The forwards tackled anyone running near them and the backs showed great positional awareness with their passing and backing up.
At the end of the day, St Monicas came in second place and will represent the northside at Rugby Union HQ on 10 June. The winner of this competition will be able to claim the Matt Giteau Cup.
The St Monica’s community can be proud of the boys’ performances and their sporting behaviour. We should all give a big shout-out to Jonno and the other parents who provided support.
It truly was a wonderful day.
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on school students with Disability
All schools in Australia are required to participate annually in the National Consistent Collection of Data for Students with Disability (NCCD). This allows our Catholic sector to continue to provide and prioritise innovative and high-quality teaching and learning to support all students on their learning journey.
The collection of this data is designed to count the number of students who receive additional adjustments or “help” at school because of a disability. This national data collection helps federal and state governments plan for the needs of students with disability. It is also the way that schools seek and receive funding to support the learning needs of their students.
Please read the attachment below for further information about the NCCD.

Scholastic Book Fair
Thank you to all the families who have been in to buy books from the book fair. You have supported both your children’s love of reading and the school library. I look forward to buying new titles for the students to enjoy reading. The book fair will be open Thursday and Friday afternoon from 3.15pm to 4pm and on Friday morning from 8.30am until 9.15am.
National Simultaneous Storytime
Yesterday St Monica’s students joined over 2 million children across Australia and New Zealand for the biggest Australian storytime ever to celebrate reading. Visit ALIA News Biggest Storytime Ever to read more details. The Book for 2022 a “celebration of family, community and the seasons of life to cherish and to share” was Family Tree by Josh Pyke and Ronojoy Ghosh. Hopefully this story provided stimulus for discussing your own families.
Kids’ Lit Quiz
On Wednesday 25 May we had 4 Year 6 students representing St Monica’s at the ACT Heat of Kids’ Lit Quiz at Merici College. Our second team needed to withdraw due to illness. Sarah, Sophie, Emilia and Lachlan worked well together to answer 100 questions about literature. Well done to Sophie who won 3 of the bonus trivia questions and received a $15 voucher. Thank you to Mrs Moir for her assistance with preparing the students and Mrs Lloyd for accompanying the students on the day to the event.
