Assistant Principal News - Maggie Lloyd
Wow! What a fantastic term this has been. The school has been absolutely humming and once again a huge thank you must go out to our wider school community for your wonderful support for our students.
It continues to be an absolute privilege to be part of the St Monica’s community. I wanted to thank all the staff for their professionalism and dedication to all our students. As we reach the end of another term it is the perfect time to reflect on the remarkable work they all do. This term has been filled with challenges, growth, and learning opportunities for our children. None of it would have been possible without the incredible dedication and passion of our teachers and support staff.
It has been a productive term with engaging teaching and learning in our classrooms resulting in positive academic growth for our students. We have had many events take place, school disco, Feast Day celebrations, our silent disco, the school walk-a-thon, gala days, science shows, Book Week, Father’s Day and our Year 6 students making their Sacrament of Confirmation just last week. Add a musical in the mix and it has been a full term! I wish you all a restful and well-deserved break!
A reminder that students are to wear their Summer Uniform again in Term 4. We will have the usual transition period to cater for any unpredictable weather.
We look forward to welcoming our students back to school on Monday, 14 October.
Thank you to everyone for your support this term.

Monthly Prayer
Good Father, the cry of the earth
strikes in the Heart of your Son Jesus,
and cries out to us "I want mercy and not sacrifices".
Our Common Home implores us
a bold and radical change in our way of life.
We need courage, and a holy indignation
to commit ourselves to a cultural change
that welcomes the cry of the earth and the poor.
We need the fire of your Holy Spirit
to burn in our hearts,
to contemplate and give thanks,
to welcome and to care,
so that we may all feel as one in you.
May our gestures of love and care
for everyone and everything, rise up to You
as a universal prayer of adoration,
Of thanksgiving and forgiveness.
May our daily living reflect a temperate, and modest lifestyle
that moderates how excessively greedy we tend to be with the world and each other.
May we embrace this cry for help
transforming it with our decisions
into a loving and consoling melody.
Amen

Culture Club – Celebrating Indigenous Culture - Alissa Pearson
Yuma! Did you know our Indigenous students meet regularly as Culture Club to explore and celebrate First Nations ways of knowing, being and doing? Here is a little snapshot as to what we get up to!
Term 3 has been our busiest term to date with much to celebrate regarding First Nations Education. In week one, our Indigenous students were invited to play a special role in the NAIDOC Week Mass at the Cathedral by reading the prayers of intercession. Each student read beautifully and reverently while considering this year’s theme Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud. After Mass, our students also had the opportunity to meet Archbishop Christopher and Director of Catholic Education , Ross Fox.
During the term we continued to share our learning of Aboriginal culture with Ngunnawal Word of the Fortnight. During Culture Club we have researched Ngunnawal words that we can use in every day conversations that connect us to the ancient voices of this land and open up insightful learnings around language, culture and place. Here is a list of the Ngunnawal words Culture Club have learned and shared so far:
Hello – Yuma
Goodbye – Yara
How are you? - Yadhung gadba?
Good – Yadung
Bad – Gadba
Thank you – Dhjan yimaba
Welcome – Yumalundi
The final word for term 3 is our first footstep:
Respect – Yindumara.
Last week some of our students also joined other students from all around Canberra at the Corrobboree Family and Culture Day at the University of Canberra. Organised by the Indigenous Education Advisory Committee it was the first whole of ACT event learning about the richness and diversity of Indigenous cultures and deepening connections with community.
In exciting news we have a very special guest on the first day of term 4. Mitch Tambo will be performing for the whole school! Mitch rose to stardom with his interpretation of John Farnham’s You’re the Voice during the final of Australia’s Got Talent. His arrangement of Indigenous music with modern beats and Aussie anthems is captivating. Check out Mitch’s music!
Dhjan yimaba yara!
(Thank you and goodbye in Ngunnawal language).
This week we explored and used magnetic forces to help create paintings and to build homes for the animals. There was a lot of decision making and language skills being used to create and to classify animals into their home settings. We also had a surprise visit from Mrs Pearson and delighted in singing and creating music together! A reminder that we are on school holidays for the next 2 weeks and are looking forward to gathering together next term.
