Dear St Monica’s families and friends,
I don’t know about you, but I have loved jumping on the couch of an evening and tuning into the coverage of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Any of the athletes from any country, competing in the games, could’ve attended St Monica’s as they all seem to use our Footsteps approach! It is admirable to watch the Respect they show for their fellow competitors, Resilience when they didn’t make a final, missed out on a medal by 0.01 of a second or pushed themselves to the absolute limits to gain a personal best or smash a World Record, Engagement with their team mates and immersing themselves into an atmosphere of being in a different country, Growth understanding what they need to do next time to be more successful or learning something new.
Tomorrow we will be celebrating the Olympics by hosting a Green & Gold day. Please send your children in Green and Gold in support of Australian Olympic team.
Mid-Year Enrolments – We are now accepting enrolments for Semester 2 in all year levels. Do you know of someone who is considering a transfer across to St Monica’s but they are worried they have left it too late to enrol or about how their child will transition to a new school? Please encourage them to make an appointment with me and reassure them that the St Monica’s community is comprised of families and teachers who genuinely care for one another and it is a place where you will instantly feel like you belong.
School Musical – Somewhere between here there and everywhere: Auditions are complete, scripts, songs and dance moves are being learned and there is a production vibe going on around the school. It has been a while since we have put on a wider school performance and this year it will involve all students from our 3 – 6 classes. Save the following dates for our evening performances, which will be held on Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 September. There will also be a matinee performance on Wednesday 11 September.
In Term 4, we will have our K – 2 classes perform a Christmas Story, which involves the narrative of Advent, the Nativity and the joy of Christmas.
Baby News
Congratulations to the Lam Shang Leen family (Stacey - 5 Maroon, Esther and Elijah ex students) on the arrival of their baby brother Sasha.
Tell them from Me Survey - next week I will be inviting parents, teachers and students to provide feedback on their experiences of St Monica’s Primary School through the annual online “Tell Them From Me” Survey. The survey is anonymous, and whilst this presents an opportunity for a safe space to air grievances, I would hope that any complaints or criticisms would also be brought to my attention directly.
Peace and blessings,
This term our whole school focus is Flourishing through the Footstep of Engagement. Engagement is a willingness to participate, a choice to play an active role in the opportunities around us. How will you use the Footstep of Engagement to Flourish and be your true self? Tomorrow 2 White will lead us for our first Whole School Prayer on Flourishing in Engagement with the focus on ourselves. You are invited to join our community in St Monica’s church at 9.15am.
August: A Month of Reverence for Three Remarkable Women
August holds special significance in the Christian calendar, honouring three extraordinary women: Mary, the mother of Jesus, Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, and Our Patron Saint Monica. Each of these women has left a permanent mark on the faith of Christians and continue to inspire millions around the world.
Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop
Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, Australia's first saint, is celebrated next week on 8 August. Known for her dedication to education and social justice, Mary MacKillop founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, providing education to the poor and marginalized. Her legacy of compassion and service continues to inspire Australians and people worldwide.
Mary, Mother of Jesus
15 August is celebrated as the Feast of the Assumption, commemorating the occasion that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken up into heaven body and soul. This day is a major feast in the Catholic Church and one of a few Holy Days of Obligation, where practising Catholics must attend Mass. The Feast of the Assumption reflects Mary's purity and her role as the mother of the Saviour. The Assumption is a reminder of the hope and promise of eternal life.
Saint Monica
Saint Monica, our patron saint and the mother of Saint Augustine, is remembered on 27 August. She is revered for her unwavering faith and perseverance in prayer, especially for the conversion of her son. Monica's life is a testament to the power of prayer and the strength of a mother's love.
As we journey through August, let us reflect on the virtues of these remarkable women and draw inspiration from their lives of faith, service, and devotion.

The Book Cow has copies of their books and you can order them online. The books will be signed by the author and delivered to the school in time for the author's visit. We could barely contain ourselves yesterday in playgroup - it was all about the bear necessities. We used our eye hand coordination to make teddy bear biscuits (and so did our Year 6 helpers) and used our fine motor skills cutting and collaging a beary cute bear. Next week we will be experimenting with some science experiments! We hope to see you there.

Mobile Phones and Behaviour Expectations
To ensure a safe and respectful environment we kindly request your cooperation in adhering to the following guidelines:
No Phones at the School Disco: Students are not bring their phones to the school disco. This measure is taken to encourage face-to-face interactions, enhance the overall experience, and prevent distractions during the event.
Encouraging Social Interaction: The school disco is a fantastic opportunity for your children to engage in face-to-face interactions with their peers. Dancing and socialising in a real-world setting can help build confidence, communication skills, and lasting friendships.
Parents please drop your child off and be punctual for pick up. We ask that only volunteers remain in the hall throughout the disco times. Restricting access to school grounds helps maintain a secure environment for students and staff and ensures that only authorised personnel are present.
By adhering to these guidelines we aim to create a positive and enjoyable atmosphere for all attendees. We appreciate your understanding and support in helping us maintain a safe and respectful environment. Please discuss with your children the St Monica’s behaviour expectations.
Thank you for your cooperation. We look forward to a fantastic school disco!
School Student Broadband Initiative
School Student Broadband Initiative - Free internet until December 2025
To find out more call: 1800 954 610 (10am – 6pm AEDT Monday to Friday) or visit https://www.anglicarevic.org.au/student-internet/
The Australian Government has announced that they are extending the School Student Broadband Initiative until 31 December 2025. The extension means that the SSBI nomination period will remain open until 31 December 2024 with free National Broadband Network (nbn) internet service for all new and existing families on the SSBI until 31 December 2025. For existing SSBI families who have already signed up, this means their SSBI service will automatically be extended until 31 December 2025 (no further eligibility checks will be required). For eligible families who connect before the end of this year, they will get up to two years of free nbn broadband.
How can the School Student Broadband Initiative help your child? - Children who can access online learning at home as part of their education are more likely to engage in classroom activities. Access to fast internet at home can also support children to build their digital skills, learn how to safely use the internet and participate in a world that is more dependent on digital technology.
Is my family eligible for the School Student Broadband Initiative?
To be eligible, families must:
Have a child living at home that is enrolled in an Australian school (up to year 12 including Prep in Qld/Vic/Tas, Kindergarten in ACT/NSW, Reception in SA, Transition in NT and Pre-Primary in WA).
Not have an active National Broadband Network (nbn®) Internet service at home. Having a mobile internet service does not affect eligibility.
Live in a premises that can access the National Broadband Network via a standard connection – this will be checked for you.
Not have had an active nbn connection during the previous 14 days.
