Dear St Monica’s families and friends,
We are now halfway through Term Two, the days are getting shorter and the darkness is lasting for longer. Winter is coming!! Isn’t it funny how during the long hot days in summer we wish for it to be cooler, then the cooler season arrives and we can’t wait for it to be warm again!
As we enter the colder months, it is inevitable more staff and students will be afflicted with coughs, colds and other ailments. If your child is unwell, please keep them at home where they will be snug and warm and have a better chance at recovering quickly. It is important for our community that we limit the spread of illness and infections. By staying home when we are sick we protect the vulnerable members of our community, we reduce outbreaks and most importantly resting and recuperating allows your body to recover more effectively and shorten the duration of your illness.
Please encourage your child/ren to practise good hygiene - cover your mouth / nose with a tissue or elbow when you cough or sneeze, dispose of tissues in the bin, wash hands frequently with soap and water or hand sanitiser.
Kindergarten 2025 interviews - Interviewing our incoming Kindergarten students and their families is one of my favourite times of the school year. We have several children ready for big school next year and it is great to welcome them officially to the St Monica’s community.
I thank our parent community for spreading the good news about St Monica’s and the opportunities we provide our students. The official enrolment period closes tomorrow but we can accept enrolments for all grade levels, including Kindergarten for next year, at any time. If you know of someone who wishes to enrol but think they’ve missed the deadline, please reassure them there is still time and to contact the school.
Rostrum Finals - Yesterday, alongside Mrs Lloyd and Ms Moir, I had the privilege of adjudicating the Rostrum final for our school. I was so impressed with the caliber of speakers this year, who wowed us with the topics ‘Bad Advice’, ‘A new Olympic Sport’, ‘So Exhausting’, ‘Think Big’ and ‘Let it Snow’.Our school winner was Kushi, who convinced her audience to “Think Big” just like the Wright Brothers, Alexander Graham Bell and Alan Turing who changed the world! Congratulations Kushi, who now goes on to the Quarter Finals of Rostrum in a few weeks. We also congratulate Zander and Phoebe who were our Runner-ups!
School Uniform & Jewellery - Thank you for sending your children into school wearing the correct uniform each day. We have noticed however, a number of additional accessories being worn at school. Wristbands, bracelets, beads, rings, coloured scrunchies and headbands and dangly earrings are not part of the St Monica’s uniform and are to be saved for the weekend. A small pair of stud or sleeper earrings, fine chain with a crucifix and a watch may be worn at school. Smart watches, that are able to receive text messages or make phone calls, must come to the Front Office with phones for safe keeping.
Catholic schools enrolment period – The Catholic schools enrolment period closes tomorrow, Friday 31 May. If you know of someone from the suburbs of Evatt, Melba, Spence or McKellar who is interested in coming and finding out more about our amazing school please invite them to contact the school for a tour and encourage them to like and follow us on our Social Media pages too.
Please note, sibling enrolments are not automatic. If you are an existing family at our school and you have a child ready for Kindergarten, you need to enrol them now! If you have a child in Year 6, please make sure you get your enrolment into your school of choice for Year 7.

If you are having difficulty making payment and need more time please email me - kirralea.thompson@cg.catholic.edu.au to discuss.
Reminder about CompassPay
A number of our families are paying school fees directly through Compass (don't get me wrong I'm so glad you're paying). However, we are being charged a high rate for payments we receive on CompassPay. If you are able to, please set up your payment through your bank via BPay, this is our preferred method of payment for school fees. Your BPay details can be found on the bottom of your statements.
We are happy to receive CompassPay payments for events but would prefer school fees are paid via BPay, Eftpos or Cash at the Front Office.

School Student Broadband Initiative
School Student Broadband Initiative - Free internet until December 2025
To find out more call: 1800 954 610 (10am – 6pm AEDT Monday to Friday) or visit https://www.anglicarevic.org.au/student-internet/
The Australian Government has announced that they are extending the School Student Broadband Initiative until 31 December 2025. The extension means that the SSBI nomination period will remain open until 31 December 2024 with free National Broadband Network (nbn) internet service for all new and existing families on the SSBI until 31 December 2025. For existing SSBI families who have already signed up, this means their SSBI service will automatically be extended until 31 December 2025 (no further eligibility checks will be required). For eligible families who connect before the end of this year, they will get up to two years of free nbn broadband.
How can the School Student Broadband Initiative help your child? - Children who can access online learning at home as part of their education are more likely to engage in classroom activities. Access to fast internet at home can also support children to build their digital skills, learn how to safely use the internet and participate in a world that is more dependent on digital technology.
Is my family eligible for the School Student Broadband Initiative?
To be eligible, families must:
Have a child living at home that is enrolled in an Australian school (up to year 12 including Prep in Qld/Vic/Tas, Kindergarten in ACT/NSW, Reception in SA, Transition in NT and Pre-Primary in WA).
Not have an active National Broadband Network (nbn®) Internet service at home. Having a mobile internet service does not affect eligibility.
Live in a premises that can access the National Broadband Network via a standard connection – this will be checked for you.
Not have had an active nbn connection during the previous 14 days.
