Dear St Monica’s families and friends,
Mothers' Day
Whilst the 2nd Sunday in May, is the day we celebrate Mothers' Day, the entire month of May is dedicated to Mary, Mother of God and us all. Throughout May, the ways we can honour Mary are to pray the Rosary, say the Hail Mary, create a prayer corner with representation of our Blessed Mother eg small statue of Mary / Rosary Beads and a vase of flowers for her!
To all of the amazing women in our lives: mums, grandmothers, nans, neighbours, aunts, sisters, colleagues and friends. Happy Mothers' Day! May you be blessed with a sleep-in, warm cups of tea or coffee, snuggles and hugs, breakfast in bed and perhaps even some delightful treats from the Mothers' Day Stall! Join us from 8.15am, in the courtyard, for Danishes and a cuppa on us.
Visitors from St Benedict’s Mango Hill, Queensland
On Monday we had visitors from Benedict’s Primary School, Brisbane. I am indebted to my teachers who had open classroom doors and allowed our visitors to see some great teaching in action. They were really impressed with how “calm” our school was, as far as behaviour goes, which is testament to the important work we have put into around expectations, structures and routines.
Catholic schools enrolment period – The Catholic schools enrolment period is now open and will close on Friday 31 May. St Monica’s is hosting an Open Day tours and an Informtion Evening on Tuesday 14 May and Open Day tours on Thursday 16 May. (See attached flyer)
If you know of someone from the suburbs of Evatt, Melba, Spence or McKellar who is interested in coming and finding out more about our amazing school please invite them to our Open Days and encourage them to like and follow us on our Social Media pages too!
PLease note, sibling enrolments are not automatic. If you are an existing family at our school and you have a child ready for Kindergarten, you need to enrol them now! If you have a child in Year 6, please make sure you get your enrolment into your school of choice for Year 7.
Warmest wishes,
Season of Easter and Mother’s Day
In our Liturgical Year, this coming Sunday is the fortieth day after Easter and The Ascension of the Lord. The Gospel of Mark (16:15-20) tells us that on this day, Jesus is taken to heaven and the disciples go forth to preach as Jesus commanded.
This Sunday is also Mother’s Day. Tomorrow 3 Maroon will lead us in a special Whole School Prayer dedicated to Mothers in our church at 9.15am. You are invited to join us for our Whole School Prayer after our coffee and danish breakfast.
As we approach Mother’s Day, we often spend time reflecting on the mothers in our lives and the role of motherhood. As we reflect on mothers, we think about their significant role in our lives. In families we often share physical or behavioural mannerisms. We might hear “She’s her mother’s daughter.” In children we see and know the mothers. At St Monica’s we are so blessed to have the wonderful mothers and grandmothers in our community. Though we spend less time with these amazing women, we see them and their influence in the children we are so grateful to work with everyday.

A lovely day was had by the children making gifts for Mother’s Day (and all the mums promised to act surprised when they are given them). There were lots of fine motor skills being developed by decorating a pot plant and planting a flower inside. They also used their eye hand coordination skills to create noodle necklaces and bracelets for their special mums. A few even made an extra pot plant for their amazing grandmothers who bring the children each week. Next week we will be making and exploring fossils.

School Student Broadband Initiative
School Student Broadband Initiative - Free internet until December 2025
To find out more call: 1800 954 610 (10am – 6pm AEDT Monday to Friday) or visit https://www.anglicarevic.org.au/student-internet/
The Australian Government has announced that they are extending the School Student Broadband Initiative until 31 December 2025. The extension means that the SSBI nomination period will remain open until 31 December 2024 with free National Broadband Network (nbn) internet service for all new and existing families on the SSBI until 31 December 2025. For existing SSBI families who have already signed up, this means their SSBI service will automatically be extended until 31 December 2025 (no further eligibility checks will be required). For eligible families who connect before the end of this year, they will get up to two years of free nbn broadband.
How can the School Student Broadband Initiative help your child? - Children who can access online learning at home as part of their education are more likely to engage in classroom activities. Access to fast internet at home can also support children to build their digital skills, learn how to safely use the internet and participate in a world that is more dependent on digital technology.
Is my family eligible for the School Student Broadband Initiative?
To be eligible, families must:
Have a child living at home that is enrolled in an Australian school (up to year 12 including Prep in Qld/Vic/Tas, Kindergarten in ACT/NSW, Reception in SA, Transition in NT and Pre-Primary in WA).
Not have an active National Broadband Network (nbn®) Internet service at home. Having a mobile internet service does not affect eligibility.
Live in a premises that can access the National Broadband Network via a standard connection – this will be checked for you.
Not have had an active nbn connection during the previous 14 days.
