Assistant Principal - Maggie Lloyd
Dear Parents and Carers
I cannot believe that we are heading into Week 7! I think this week is timely given the fast pace of Term 1… parent information night, swimming carnival, gala days, parent meet and greets, establishing new school routines, establishing new home routines, the list is never ending!
I always enjoy the opportunity to take a breath in Week 7. This week is our Sabbath Week and traditionally it is a week free from homework. I like to think of it as an opportunity to try and slow the pace a little. We hope this week provides families the opportunity to spend a little more time together and a moment to unwind as we head into the back end of term 1.
I wanted to share that it has warmed my heart to see so much generosity around our school and to witness so many thoughtful actions. I have seen students clean up our school community, give so much through Project Compassion, support one another in our swimming carnival, classroom life and playground interactions.
Our Year 6 leaders have taken their role seriously, organising activities, sharing information, leading by example. The care they have shown to the new students to our school and of course their Kinder buddies has been inspiring.
We then have our Fete committee working tirelessly behind the scenes to organise our school fete. We thank them for their continued coordination and we are so excited for everything they are doing to make our fete happen.
Our teachers continue to work tirelessly to support all our students and each other! Honestly what an amazing school community we are all a part of here at St Monica’s.

Social Action and Justice
Third Week of Lent
St Monica’s, we have raised an outstanding $406 for Project Compassion, and we are only 3 weeks in. We still have another 3 weeks of our fundraising period and if you have capacity your donations are valued. Each week our Year 6 Faith and Justice students go into each class to lead a Lenten reflection and share the stories of those our funds are helping. A common theme across all the stories we are hearing is the power education has to change lives.
Samoa may be a country surrounded by water, but access to clean drinking water is scarce in some areas, with many families facing extreme hardship as a result.
Leaia lives with her five children, husband, brother and sister-in-law on the island of Upolu in Samoa. Not having access to a reliable source of clean water caused Leaia a lot of worry.
Their home is not connected to a piped water system, so they had to rely solely on rainwater collected in old fridges. When their water ran out, Leaia had to walk with her young children to collect water in buckets and containers from a neighbour down the street.
With the support of Caritas Australia's local partner, Caritas Samoa, a water tank was installed at Leaia's home. She and her family now have a steady supply of clean drinking water at home. Next year, they will also have a toilet built, with the support of Caritas Samoa, which will further improve their health and living conditions.
“We are very thankful and grateful for the water tank. It has helped us so much and made our daily life easier,” Leaia said.
