Dear St Monica's families and friends,
This week, I was privileged to attend the National Catholic Education Conference, along with 40 of my colleagues from CECG. The theme of the conference was “The Future is Listening” and we heard repeatedly about the importance of making sure our students are heard, seen and believed.
There are three key takeaways I wish to share with you all:
- The students in our schools carry the voice of our future and as educators, the biggest thing we can do is allow our students to teach us.
- Every Catholic School is a Sacrament of Hope - a gift from God, that brings us back to God.
- Nourishing our students is like making the perfect soufflé! We need to cook them carefully, give them lots of air, combine the right ingredients and let them rise!!
Upon return to our communities we are encouraged to make a commitment to real dialogue, to use our voices to amplify others, to keep listening even when we may feel uncomfortable and to let the Holy Spirit speak through the mouths of the muted… young children, the elderly, those with disabilities, those who feel they don’t have a voice.
Peace and Blessings to all families,
Happy Birthday to the following students celebrating a Birthday this week
Jack S, Drew G, Jack R, Ciresa K, Louis T, Harry V

Boys Oz Tag Gala Day - Natalie Currie
Last week some of our Year 3-6 boys had the opportunity to represent our school at the boys OzTag Gala Day.
All the teams enjoyed playing multiple rounds versing students from other schools in our area. All the boys played with such pride for our school and had a great time doing it. It was an absolute pleasure to witness our St Monica's boys in their element.
We were lucky enough to have one of our Year 5/6 teams make the grand final, however, they got pipped at the post by one try.
A huge thank you to all of our parents that came along to the Gala Day to coach or support teams. The day ran so smoothy and the students had such a great experience because of our community support.
Chess News - Veronica Melville
St Monica's Chess Tournament
The 9th annual St Monica Chess Competition took place on Monday 5 September 2022. There were 27 entries with 13 players in the Senior competition (Years 4-6) and 14 payers in the Junior competition (Years 1-3). The standard of competition was very high and the results were very close and exciting!.
Sarah D-H (6M) won the Senior competition and Timofei S (2E) won the Junior competition. The strength of our chess players bodes well for St Monica as we compete in the ACT Junior Chess League school chess championships. Leading Scorers: St Monica Senior competition 6 – Jett S (5M), 4.5 – Aidan H (5H), 4 – Zarah L(5H), 3.5 – Gabe J (6JG), 3- Jaiden B (6F), Sian S (5FM), Vsevolod K (6M), Kobe B (4LG). Junior Chess competition; 5 - Elizabeth D-H (2E), 4.5 – Nicholas M (3CG), 4 – Tobie S (2MD), Leonardo S (1RC), Audrey M (2E), Max S (3CG), Matthew P (2E), Grayson A (3CG), 3.5 – Hugh B (1BC).
The students played 7 games across the day and every student had at least 1 point by the end of the tournament.
I witnessed students walking in the footsteps of St Monica through their demonstration of respect for their opponents and the rules of the game and resilience when moves didn’t work or they lost a game. The students were engaging in the games and this was demonstrated by how focused they were on their moves. It was the first time many had participated in a tournament and there was growth in their skills as chess players.
Congratulations to Sarah who won the Senior division and Timofei who won the Junior division. Well done to Jett - 2nd and Aidan- 3rd in the Senior division and Elizabeth - 2nd and Nicholas - 3rd in the Junior division.
Thank you to Mr Drake and Mr David Hoole for adjudicating and Mrs David Hoole for record keeping and organising the draw. It is only with their support that days like today are able to occur.
