Reading Tips for Parents

As a parent, there are many strategies that you can use when reading with your child at home.

Prior to reading with your child a book orientation is essential. Some key things to include when you are doing a book orientation are:

- Look at the book title and cover and discuss any predictions that can be made about what the book may be about.

- Do a picture walk through the book. Have a look at the pictures prior to reading and discuss what the characters might be doing on each page.

- Identify any words that may be tricky and practice saying them before reading.

During reading monitoring and making sure that your child is understanding what is happening in the story is important. Some strategies to use during reading are:

- Prompting using word attack strategies like sound out, re-read and chunk the sounds.

- Prompting using reading strategies like predicting and connecting.

- Ask questions throughout the book like, what is the character doing here? why do you think the character made that choice?

Finally after reading it is important to review the book you have read. Some tips when reviewing include:

- Praising your child for reading with fluency, expression or the use word attack strategies.

- Asking questions about what has been read.

- Revisiting any tricky words or parts in the story.
