Annual School Improvement Plan - Part 3

Focus 3: Develop a shared understanding of how the Australian Curriculum is implemented at  St Monica’s

During 2019 the staff will develop a schoolwide map of Concepts based on the Achievement Standards and Professional Learning guidance.

Each of the St Monica's Professional Learning Teams (PLTs) will complete action research on the application of the Australian Curriculum in English, Mathematics and Conceptual Inquiry (Including RE) that lead to improved student academic growth.

How are we going to do this?

Curriculum Implementation & PLTs

PLTs to complete action learning on the use of Achievement Standards in Conceptual Inquiry (including RE), English and Mathematics.

Achievement standards for each learning area or subject describe the learning expected of students at each year level or band of years.

Address the use of General Capabilities in classroom programming.

The general capabilities play a significant role in the Australian Curriculum in equipping young Australians to live and work successfully in the twenty-first century.

In the Australian Curriculum, capability encompasses knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions. Students develop capability when they apply knowledge and skills confidently, effectively and appropriately in complex and changing circumstances, in their learning at school and in their lives outside school.

The Australian Curriculum includes seven general capabilities

Literacy & Numeracy

Deepening teacher knowledge and skills of effective literacy practices by engaging in targeted PD and mentoring.

With the guidance of a Literacy Mentor (Petra Cole) review and redevelop the agreed structure to the English block,on going implementation of SoundsWrite and development of a Reading Plan.

Ongoing consultation with Leonie Anstey, a Mathematics Consultant, in developing and maintaining our numeracy block and implementation of effective teaching strategies

Participate in the MathsBURST Project with Tom Lowrie  (UC Project) - Yrs 4-6

MathsBURST is an inquiry-based teacher professional learning and student enrichment program that:

    • develops students’ mathematics understandings through the spatial reasoning component of the general numeracy capability; and
    • promotes STEM practices through units of work that integrate STEM across all curriculum areas with digital tools.
