Principal's Message

Dear Parents

Awards System in 2020

You would have noticed that our rewards and awards system has changed with the removal of our M&M's system at the end of last year. We have also finished the use of value and class awards on a weekly basis and moved to an award system that relates to our focus every three weeks and each term. At the end of each 3-week focus, 1 student from each class will receive a St Monica's Star Award at the Friday assembly for emulating the focus. Then, on the last day of each term, 2 students from each class will receive a St Monica's Pride Badge for emulating the term focus on St Monica. Our current focus for this 3 week period is Support and our term focus is Prayer.

Whole School Gatherings 2020

As a result of our renewed award system, and our strategic goal of improving Literacy and Numeracy, we have streamlined our whole school gatherings. The new structure will be as follows:

  • Monday morning gathering at 9:00am in the courtyard for messages and occasional acknowledgement of student achievements
  • School Prayer led by one class in Weeks 1,2,4,5,7 and 8 on Friday at 1:00pm in the Church
  • Awards and Grade Assemblies in Weeks 3,6,9 and 10 on Friday at 1:00pm in the Hall.

Year 5/6 Camp

There are a number of excited students in Years 5 and 6, and perhaps some who are a little nervous, about going to Camp Cooba next Wednesday to Friday. We are sure that all of these students will return on Friday looking a little weary but having had a fantastic time. Thank you to all our wonderful staff who go above and beyond to sacrifice time with their families to attend camp and be on duty 24/7.

Conversations on Goal Setting (CoGS)

The school was a buzz of excitement during Tuesday and Wednesday evening as our students came with their parents to participate in their Conversations on Goal Setting (CoGS). In 2020 our grade teams decided the approach they felt would best suit their students' ability to set goals and prepare for the meeting. We hope all families, teachers and students were able to engage in a collaborative conversation to create two individual goals. The conversations will continue next week.

Cross Country Format Change

In 2020 we have changed the format of our school Cross Country Carnival to be held on Monday 30 March from 9:00am - 12:30pm. The Carnival will take place on tracks mapped out around the school, similar to those used for our Walkathon. This will alleviate costs involved with hiring Stomlo and buses and ensure students do not miss out on valuable learning that is lost through a whole day event. Thank you to Mrs Russell and Mrs Brown for coordinating the new course and obtaining approval from TAMS.

Class Raffle Baskets

The class raffle baskets have been distributed to classes for our Fete. Families have the option to contribute an item to the class raffle basket or donate a family pack to be sold.

Kindergarten - Better Homes and Gardens, Year 1 - Boredom Buster, Year 2 - Easter, Year 3 - Celebration, Year 4 - Easter, Year 5 - Stationery and Craft, Year 6 - Cookin' up a storm.

Tombola Day

On Monday 23 March we will have Tombola Day. For our new families Tombola Day is when the children bring in a bottle or plastic jar or goodies for prizes of a number game coordinated by the school staff on Fete day. The bottles/jars can be filled with lollies, pencils, erasers, stationery, licorice, musk sticks, bubble bath, hair ties. The options are endless. It will be a uniform free day on Tombola Day. Children can wear casual clothes but must wear their joggers and hat. For each bottle/jar donated children will receive a ticket into a lucky draw to win their choice on the tombola jars.

Welcome Monica Culas - Youth Minister

On Wednesday we welcomed Monica Culas to our school community as our Youth Minister. Monica has been engaged in the Parish for the past 12 months. In 2020 St Monica's has engaged in the Primary Schools Youth Ministry Program with the Archdiocese, resulting in the employment of Monica to work in our school 1 day per week developing youth ministry with our Year 6 students and providing support to students and classes. Monica is currently studying a Bachelor of Education at the University of Canberra so will bring many gifts to our school through her faith, ministry and vocation in education. The students were thrilled to meet Monica and even tried to convince her to come to Camp Cooba next week!

Wishing God’s blessing on you and your families.
